FENSIVE
Film, 2023, 17 ms
A sonic collaboration between Julie Weber and Holly Munro.
Fensive lies between documentary, artist’s film and a music video. It follows an artist’s examination of an environment – Clogheenmilcon Fen in Blarney, Cork. Using sardonic humour, it documents and demystifies the process of the artist after a period of stagnation. This work demonstrates the complex and interlinking processes of the artist and nature - blurring the states of both worlds through fiction and non-fictional events.
This work took place over a 12-month period, collaborating with Climate Change Researcher and Environmental Scientist James Mulcahy, a local of Blarney who has been working with Brand Blarney for the past two years. Julie Weber also collaborated with musician Holly Munro over an 8-month period. Weber responded to the site through text and performance, which was then mediated, restructured, and reinterpreted by Holly Munro. The text, constructed and deconstructed through the changing seasons, also incorporated words from community members throughout the process. The work ultimately materialised as a pop song, which was gifted to the fen, adding a new layer to the narrative of this historic location.
